NEWMAN'S CHRISTMAS TALE

by @domelgabor 2025

A few weeks ago, around the 26th of September, the day Paul Newman passed away in 2008 (at the age of 83 years old), I saw a lot of various posts on Facebook, talking about Paul Newman, and the tale of a Christmas Eve night he spent cooking at a homeless shelter in Manhattan (New York), in December 1983.

The story was truly beautiful, moving, and emotional, and it inspired me to write it as a song. It shows Paul Newman's genuine generosity and desire to help those in need—something he has done throughout his life.

The tradition began in 1982, when Paul Newman and his friend A.E. Hotchner founded the food company "NEWMAN'S OWN" as a way to give back to the people. As of December 2022, the company had donated over $600 million to good causes. "Newman's Own Foundation" was created in 2005, 3 years before Newman passed away, to ensure the philanthropic work would continue after his death. This foundation directs 100% of the profits from the sale of Newman's Own products to charities.

Since 1982, this philanthropic model has resulted in over $600 million being given to causes including seriously ill children (through the SeriousFun Children's Network), children's nutrition, and youth development. After his death, his will ensured the giving would continue by donating his ownership stake in the company to the foundation.

As I have always truly admired Paul Newman for what he was as an actor, one of the best of his generation, and as a man, for his generosity and empathy towards others, making this little song is a way for me to show my gratitude for his kindness. And I promise that if that song is ever successful and makes a few bucks, I will gladly donate those funds to a charity supporting children's education, mental health, and well-being.

So here it is, NEWMAN'S CHRISTMAS TALE. A Christmas song telling the story of how Paul Newman spent Christmas Eve in 1983, in a Manhattan shelter, helping volunteers to feed the homeless.

To capture the vibe and emotions of that story, I used warm male vocals, a ballad-style songwriter approach, a winter feel, and acoustic guitar, with a soft melody, to create a Christmas tale that evokes storytelling and offers positive, relaxing vibes.
