DOMELGABOR: I'LL STILL RISE - A melancholic yet hopeful alternative indie rock track
"I'LL STILL RISE" is a melancholic yet hopeful alternative indie rock track about finding the strength and courage to rise no matter what, despite physical and mental struggles.
It happened again...
Physical and mental health struggles are a subject I often go back to in my songs, as they are part of my daily life. I have been affected since childhood and more strongly since my early teenage years for various reasons. Although I talk openly (yet discreetly) about it occasionally with my parents and friends, it's only the tip of the iceberg, as I mostly keep the extent of the damage to myself.
I find it easier to express my emotions and feelings about this internal state in my songs. It feels like I'm talking about it indirectly, and it makes me feel better to know other people may relate to my condition, situation, and daily struggles, as they may suffer from or be affected by the same or similar problems.
The problem for me (and I'm sure for many people) is that aging does not help, as my physical and mental conditions do not improve; on the contrary, they have worsened with age, and with them the pain and consequences have increased as well. It has become terribly difficult to hide it.
It affects my daily life and routine not only at home but at work too, where I am lucky enough to be still able to manage it without showing it much, but for how long?
It also affects my relationship with my kids, family, friends, and colleagues. I have been quieter and more reserved these past 5-6 years, less social and less inclined to be with people or to go out and socialize. I find comfort in my solitude, even when it feels heavy and lonely. At least I'm not bothering anyone with my problems.
This "body-and-mind condition eating me alive," as I wrote in this song, is a burden I wish on no one, and thank God, my kids don't seem to have my problems. They may have other issues of their own, but not my physical condition, at least, which is a good thing.
Since early childhood, I never felt I was enough, and the environment and mentality in France in the 80s and 90s didn't help either. I'm not saying it was the same for everyone. Still, it felt like nobody cared; they were always busy and not attentive or understanding enough to really see the problem.
Moreover, they couldn't understand why or how I had this problem, since they didn't have it themselves and therefore couldn't imagine I could. They probably thought I was just a spoiled brat seeking attention, but the opposite was true.
However, I don't want to dwell on my past, but what I mean is that it is already difficult to grow up as a kid and transition to the teenage years, so if the environment is not favorable and the people surrounding you are not encouraging or supporting, it often becomes a hard path to follow, leaving both physical and mental marks and sequels for most of the rest of your life until the day you finally succeed in making peace with it (if that ever happens).
That's why, since I started writing lyrics and songs six years ago, physical and mental illness and struggles, such as self-doubt, constant stress and anxiety, lack of self-love and self-esteem, among other things, have been recurring subjects in my songs.
Like everyone, my life and moods have ups and downs. It is usually when I'm down, doubting myself, unable to talk to anyone about it (except maybe my mum), that I start to have dark thoughts and an ermite attitude, preferring to live in my world in my head, in my bubble and alone, rather than confronting real life, that I write this type of song.
Lately, that's how I felt, and it made me want to write a song about it (again). A melancholic yet hopeful alternative indie rock track with meaningful, personal lyrics about how, no matter what I face, I must keep it together and rise again from the dark depths I'm in. The dark is never all dark; there is always a source of light somewhere, an exit that reveals a better version of myself, a ray of hope, a silver lining. And even if I don't necessarily rise again for myself, I must at least do it for my kids and family, to keep a certain equilibrium and sanity.
The inspiration behind the song
The subject of mental and physical illness and struggles is an inspiration in itself when you suffer from these conditions, so the inspiration behind this song came naturally. I just needed to talk about it, and having no one to talk to, as I do not want to bother people with my problems, encouraged me to write another song about it.

Another intimate song
"I'LL STILL RISE" is yet another intimate song of mine. I mean, all my songs are intimate, as they usually depict subjects I'm interested in and things I experience in my personal life. Yet some are more personal than others, like this one. So I chose an alternative indie rock style of music and voice that has both the intimate side, with the fragile piano parts, and the more energetic parts to express the action of rising again and voicing out the pain and anger.
I wrote it with a similar ambiance, atmosphere, music genre, and lyrical style to bands that I love, such as "Twenty One Pilots," "Nothing but Thieves," "Muse," "Foals," "The Black Keys," "Dead Poets Society," or even "Imagine Dragons." Something like a crossover between these bands, influenced by alternative hip-hop, electronic, alternative indie pop, and indie rock.
The lyrics of "I'LL STILL RISE" by @domelgabor
My reflection makes me frown
As Life often tries to put me down
But from every fall, I rebound
As I always find a way around
Moments of doubt and dissatisfaction
Arise when I look at my condition
And reflect on my life's circumstances
Yet I choose to embrace new chances
Maybe the gamble is the only way out
When the quiet fills you with doubt
We're all running blind, just trying to feel
Reaching for something to prove we're real
Hiding the pain and the tears in our eyes
Finding the strength and the courage to rise
The walk of life may seem long and cold
As each day, difficult paths unfold
But I ain't looking for empathy or sympathy
As in the end, I have it better than many
Honestly, I feel blessed and protected
Despite my body and mind being infected
And bad decisions in my life being reflected
Yet I make sure my loved ones aren't affected
Maybe the gamble is the only way out
When the quiet fills you with doubt
We're all running blind, just trying to feel
Reaching for something to prove we're real
Hiding the pain and the tears in our eyes
Finding the strength and the courage to rise
Facing my difficulties, I remain bold
As I want a different kind of story told
Every day I beg for a smoother ride
But there's an illness I can no longer hide
A body-and-mind condition eating me alive
Yet I still find the strength to keep my drive
Despite my descent toward my own demise
For my kids and family, I still need to rise
Maybe the gamble is the only way out
When the quiet fills you with doubt
We're all running blind, just trying to feel
Reaching for something to prove we're real
Hiding the pain and the tears in our eyes
Finding the strength and the courage to rise
Though the quiet hours seclude
Just like my hopes and moods
Just like the suns and moons
Just like the waves and tides
No matter what I face, I'll still rise
I'll still rise
I'll still rise
