DOMELGABOR: SPATIUM UNIVERSUM - A Progressive House album with Trance Vibes, conceptual and sonically cohesive

"SPATIUM UNIVERSUM" is a dark, cinematic, melodic, and hypnotic, space-themed progressive house album, infused with Trance and Techno elements, that creates an outer-space ambiance.

The accidental birth of a Space Odyssey

As explained in my previous post, it all started with one song: "ASCENT". When I finished and published it, I realized I was hooked on the sound, vibes, atmosphere, and ambiance of that song.

In fact, I was so addicted to it that I wanted more of it, to make it last. And I could have made it longer, but instead I started to work on different versions of it, some variants of the same song.

And then I thought, I should make a conceptual album with those songs, which would sound sonically cohesive, as all the songs would be similar yet different, with the same instrumentation, sounds, and vibes, only with slight variations in atmosphere and ambiance.

"ASCENT" immediately made me think of space when I first listened to it, so the album had to be space-themed. While creating and listening to the different versions, I let my mind wander and decided to title each song with a Celestial name, inspired by the sky, stars, and mythology.

Out of the different versions I made, I selected 12 for their vibes and the inspiration they gave me. And that's how the album "SPATIUM UNIVERSUM" was born: 13 very similar songs put together to convey the idea of a voyage in Space, a Space odyssey exploring some parts of the universe.

The inspiration behind the song's names

Since childhood, I have always been fascinated by spaces and the stars. I remember spending hours sometimes looking at the starry sky in my mother's garden in the countryside. It was beautiful. I even had a telescope given to me for one of my birthdays so I could look more closely at the moon and the stars. I was mesmerized.

Like for many people, I think the two most mysterious constellations (due to their respective shapes, a line and a W) that have always intrigued me and that are the most recognizable in the night sky are:

  • "ORION" with its 3 aligned stars, the distinct "Orion's Belt" (Alnitak, Alnilam, Mintaka), which also includes two of the brightest stars: Betelgeuse and Rigel.

And

  • "CASSIOPEIA" with its 5 stars forming a "W" shape (or "M" depending on how you want to see it)

And that's how I started to give the names to these songs:

"ASCENT" - Listening to this track again and again while working on it made me think of the stars and transported me to space. I felt like I was on a spaceship, right at launch, as the ignition triggered a massive upward thrust, overcoming gravity as I ascended through the atmosphere. And that's how I named this track "ASCENT" (meaning "rising" or "moving up through the air").

It felt like I was at the beginning of a space odyssey, on a long journey across the vast universe.

"ORION" - After launching in space, I thought the constellation of Orion would be a great destination. The dark, broody, echoing, and repetitive progressive house music reflects the long journey to reach the constellation. It is a reminder of the long time required to travel through space to reach a much denser, more populated region.

"NEBULA" - The journey through space finally reached the Orion Nebula. Like the Nebula itself, the music in "NEBULA" is much more complex, louder, and denser than in "ORION", more layered, energetic, and intricate, more joyful and entertaining too, like the colors of a Nebula. It is one of the flagships of this album with "ASCENT", "MILKY WAY", "RIGEL", "BETELGEUSE", and "ARCTURUS."
