DOMELGABOR: SURVEILLANCE - A political alternative rock song.
Following my 3 previously released political songs, "BASIC RIGHTS," "RUSTED HOPE," and "HOPE IS OUR WEAPON," "SURVEILLANCE" is my fourth political alternative rock song, with industrial vibes and subjective political lyrics, as a response to the current state of the world, with all its uncertainties and plausible consequences in the near future, and the increasing surveillance we are all victims of.
The "Big Brother" feeling and problems
The "Big Brother" experience is the concept of omnipresent surveillance, which evokes intense psychological feelings and creates significant practical and emotional problems. It represents a state of constant, forced scrutiny, resulting in anxiety, paranoia, and lasting mental strain.
Present surveillance challenges focus on the swift incorporation of AI into cameras, smartphones, computers, chatbots (such as ChatGPT), messaging apps, and almost all electronic devices used at work and home. These systems are crafted to mimic human interaction, respond to inquiries, write code, generate content, and aid in various tasks, resulting in widespread, often unseen, and unregulated monitoring that jeopardizes privacy, autonomy, and civil liberties.
Major concerns include biased algorithms in law enforcement, extensive data collection, "function creep," and the psychological effects of continuous observation, frequently lacking effective legal oversight or public approval.
The growing capabilities and presence of AI in our daily lives over recent years have raised concerns, leading to issues such as the "Big Brother" phenomenon. This has contributed to feelings of paranoia and distrust, isolation and claustrophobia, loss of self/privacy, and emotional and social overload. These issues have resulted in consequences such as mental health struggles (including severe anxiety, depression, and PTSD), manipulation (such as misinformation, fake news, and incorrect data), negative public perception and cyberbullying (involving intense scrutiny, judgmental comments, and mean-spirited reactions), and physical and social tolls (like poor sleep, lack of nutrition, and emotional and physical burnout).
The inspiration behind the track
Like with my 3 previous political songs, I wanted to narrow the subject and be more specific, while still putting it in context with the current state of the world. The titles of my songs are self-explanatory:
"BASIC RIGHTS" is an alternative rock song that serves as social commentary, focusing on political anxiety, the rise of authoritarianism, and the erosion of fundamental human rights and freedoms.
"RUSTED HOPE" is an alternative rock song with a political edge that tackles the world's current turbulent state. It centers on themes of social disillusionment, technological domination, and global instability. The song criticizes the tendency to adapt to problems rather than resolve them and calls for a change in mindset to create a better future.
"HOPE IS OUR WEAPON" is an alternative rock song with a political edge, emphasizing resilience and the power of hope as a catalyst for positive change, suggesting that there is still an opportunity to improve the future before it's too late.
"SURVEILLANCE" is an alternative rock track featuring subjective political lyrics that address the growing surveillance we all experience, its impact, and its repercussions on individuals and our everyday lives.
Why write political songs?
While music is often created for entertainment, for many musicians and artists, it serves mainly as a medium to convey their emotions and feelings at the time of writing. It allows them to express their inner thoughts, questions, doubts, as well as their fears, sadness, and anger. Crafting a song provides a way to articulate, through imagery, rhymes, and metaphors, what might be difficult to communicate directly to others in daily life.
A song is a compilation of images, thoughts, memories, souvenirs, ideas, ideals, goals, opinions, and reflections, articulated through words that narrate moments and stories, often drawn from personal experience, for the world to hear. Personally, even though I can be quite social at times, I tend to be shy and quiet, which makes me more expressive when writing stories, poems, and lyrics for my songs than when engaging in conversation. This is why I enjoy writing; it allows me to carefully consider what I want to say and how to convey it in a more meaningful and impactful manner.
Like everyone, I experience various moments, moods, feelings, and emotions that influence my writing. At times, I craft stories, poems, and songs about love and relationships, friendship, and shared experiences. Other times, my focus is on mental health, stress, doubts, anxiety, solitude, and depression, questioning myself with existential questions that I probably already know the answer to, but refuse to admit or procrastinate to make a change to get better. Occasionally, I write about the current state of the world, shaped by what I observe in the news and on social media.
When it's the latter, I reflect on my children and their future, pondering what kind of world they'll grow into. Currently, the future seems quite uncertain and bleak, and with everything happening globally, it no longer feels secure.
This is why I felt compelled to express myself, and these four songs (so far: "BASIC RIGHTS", "RUSTED HOPE", "HOPE IS OUR WEAPON", and now "SURVEILLANCE") serve as my outlet to rant and vent about the world's condition and the inefficiency and inaction of politicians who are supposed to improve things.
What better way to express anger and deception than through factual lyrics, loud guitar riffs, and heavy drums?
